There is a teaching that Adam & Eve were 4,000 years old before they sinned. It stems from the teaching of W.H.Offiler, a great Bible Teacher of O.T. history, who was so taken up with the types and patterns that he saw in Moses Tabernacle and the Feasts of Israel, that in the end he made the Scriptures fit the pattern, rather than the other way around.
Thus at the Feast of Passover, because the Lamb was taken on the 10th day and slain on the 14th day, and as it was 4,000 years from when Adam sinned, and the belief that the 6 days of Gen.1 were each 1000 years, therefore it must have been 10,000 years to Adam’s sin, making his life span 4930 years. (The 1000 year days is a very debatable issue, many say-24 hour days, whilst others talk of geological ages).
Let us look at the theory if it were so:=
1. There must then have been a 4000 year gap in the history of mankind between the last verse of Gen.2 and v1 of Gen.3, – without any reference whatsoever to it in the whole of the Bible !!!
This is so ridiculous that it should alone be enough to dispel this error.
2. In obedience to GOD’ s first command to Adam & Eve “to be fruitful and multiply and replenish The Earth”, and as Adam was the most handsome, physically perfect and virile man that ever lived (apart from Christ), and Eve was the most perfect, beautiful and voluptuous woman that ever walked on the Earth, and as there was no sin, sickness or death in that imaginary 4000 years, Eve could have been bearing children for the whole of that time, and with the marriage and multiplication of their descendants, by the end of the 4,000 years the Earth’s population could have grown to 20-40 billion people, aging from 1 to 3900 years + old. What happened to all these people?
3. To suggest that GOD with-held them from having children is unthinkable as GOD would have been. Enoch “walked with God” for 300 years and was translated ! acting against His own explicit command ! Our GOD is a true and faithful GOD !
4. It is evident from Gen. 3-8 that God came into the Garden to talk with Noah in the cool of the day, He loved Adam’s company, hence His cry of agony “Adam, where art thou”? after Adam sinned!. Enoch “walked with GOD” for 300 years, and had so absorbed the nature of God that he was taken alive into Heaven, never to die! If Adam & Eve had been in close fellowship with GOD for 4000 years, how can you imagine that they would then rebel against Him? No, Satan had to get it in quick beforehand, so
Adam was probably only a few days and innocent of evil before Satan struck!~
5. The Bible is more explicit about the life of Adam than any of the other patriarchs; e.g. Gen.5-27 it says “So all the days of Methuselah were 969 years and he died”, but in the case of Adam it says “So all the days “that Adam lived” were 930 years, and he died (NOT 4930). !!!
Other examples of teaching by type rather than by the written Word is that the 24 Elders in Rev’n Ch. 4 and 5 are the 12 apostles of Jesus day and 12 “last day” apostles who will arise and bring forth a “perfect church” on Earth, yet the song they sing proves they represent a very great company “out of every tribe and tongue and nation”, the same as the glorious woman of Rev.12 is a picture of a great company of the saved Church of God.
W.H.Offiler also claims the 12 last day apostles are the 12 angels at the 12 gates of pearl in Rev. 21 .
Satan hates the books of Genesis and Revelation because they tell of his treachery and his final downfall and does everything in his power to deceive men.
Another example (not of Offiler) is the teaching by 90% of modern day prophets in a “7 year tribulation”, yet there is not one verse in the whole of the Bible that says so; the whole false teaching hangs on a fantastic misinterpretation of Dan. 9-27, in the “ 70 weeks” prophecy which is all about the coming of the Messiah, and His glorious sacrifice “in the middle of the week” when He put an end to all the Jewish sacrifices; to claim antichrist does this is tantamount to blasphemy. !
Again some Bible Commentaries say Noah was 120 years building the Ark; that this is wrong is proved by the Bible account in Gen. 6 when GOD told Noah to build the Ark and take his wife, 3 sons and their wives into it; as Shem could then reasonably be assumed to be about 58 years old, and as he was 98 when the Flood came, it was most likely about 40 years, but certainly not 120!
